Abe is most often an English short form of Abraham, a Hebrew name traditionally interpreted as “father of many.” Abraham is a central patriarch in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and the diminutive Abe became especially familiar in the United States through President Abraham “Abe” Lincoln. Japanese politician Abe Shinzō bore Abe as a surname rather than a given name.
