Meaning and history
Abram is the original biblical form of Abraham and comes from Hebrew, traditionally interpreted as "exalted father." In Genesis, God changes Abram's name to Abraham as part of a covenant promising that he will become the ancestor of many nations. The shorter form later entered English Christian use. Notable bearers include film producer Abram Nathaniel Spanel and politician Abram Hewitt.
