Meaning and history
Ada began as a short form of Germanic names such as Adelaide and Adelina, built from an element meaning "noble." It was borne by a seventh-century Frankish abbess, but its best-known historical bearer is Ada Lovelace, the nineteenth-century mathematician who described an algorithm for Charles Babbage's proposed Analytical Engine and is often regarded as an early computer programmer. The name was revived in the English-speaking world during the nineteenth century.
