Meaning and history

Adonijah is the English biblical form of Hebrew Adoniyyah, meaning “Yahweh is my lord.” Several people bear the name in the Hebrew Bible. The best known is King David’s son Adonijah, who attempted to secure the throne near the end of David’s life but was displaced by Solomon and later executed. The name’s significance is therefore primarily scriptural and royal. Modern bearers are rare, and it should not be confused with Adonai, a Hebrew title for God.
