Agnese is the Italian and Latvian form of Agnes. Agnes comes from Greek Hagnē, meaning “chaste” or “pure,” and was later associated in Latin with agnus, “lamb.” Saint Agnes of Rome, a young martyr, made the name widely important in Christianity and inspired lamb symbolism in art.
