Meaning and history

Ailbhe comes from Old Irish Ailbe and is possibly derived from the Celtic root * albiyo- meaning “world, light, white” or from Old Irish ail meaning “rock.” In Irish legend, it was the name of a female warrior of the Fianna, and it was also borne by a 6th-century male saint who founded a monastery at Emly.
