Ailis is an unaccented form of Irish Ailís, the Irish form of Alice. Alice derives from the Old French name Aalis, a short form of the Germanic Adelaide, meaning “noble kind” or “of noble type.” The name became familiar through medieval European royalty and later literature. The Irish accent is normally written Ailís. Notable bearers include Irish writer Ailís Ní Dhuibhne and Irish rugby union player Ailís Egan.
