Meaning and history
Alen has several regional uses. In Croatian, Slovene, and other South Slavic languages it is commonly a form of Alan, a name of uncertain origin that may relate to the ancient Iranian Alans. In Armenian it can function as a short form of Alexander, from Greek elements meaning “defender of people.” These routes should remain distinct. Notable bearers include Croatian footballer Alen Bokšić and Bosnian footballer Alen Halilović.
