Meaning and history
Alexis comes from the Greek name Ἄλεξις (Alexis), meaning “helper” or “defender,” from Greek ἀλέξω (alexo), “to defend, to help.” It was the name of a 3rd-century BC Greek comic poet and several saints, and is sometimes used interchangeably with the related name Ἀλέξιος, or Alexius, borne by five Byzantine emperors. In English-speaking countries, it is more commonly given to girls, a trend influenced by the American actress Alexis Smith (1921–1993), who began appearing in films in the early 1940s, and later boosted by a character on the 1980s soap opera Dynasty.
