Meaning and history
Spanish and Italian form of Alphonsus, the Latin form of the Visigothic name *Aþalafuns, meaning “noble and ready” and derived from the Gothic elements aþals “noble” and funs “ready.” It was borne by several kings of Spain, including those of Asturias, León, Castile, and Aragon, as well as Portugal, beginning with Alfonso I of Asturias in the 8th century. The name was sometimes written in Latin as Adefonsus, leading to the theory that its first element may come from another source, perhaps haþus meaning “battle,” and that two or more names may have merged into one form.
