Meaning and history
Algar means “elf spear,” from Old English ælf, meaning “elf,” and gar, meaning “spear.” The name fell out of common use after the Norman Conquest, when it was absorbed into similar-sounding names and Norman and Scandinavian cognates, but it was briefly revived in the 19th century.
