Meaning and history
Originally a Norman French nickname meaning “having a moustache,” derived from aux gernons and applied to William de Percy, a companion of William the Conqueror, Algernon was first used as a given name in the 15th century for a descendant of William de Percy. The name was later used for a mouse character in Daniel Keyes’s short story Flowers for Algernon (1958) and its 1966 novel of the same title.
