Meaning and history
Alma probably developed from the Latin word almus, meaning "nourishing" or "kind," and also coincides with the Spanish word for "soul." Although it existed earlier, it became widely fashionable after the Battle of Alma in 1854, a British and French victory in the Crimean War. Notable bearers include composer Alma Mahler and filmmaker Alma Har'el.
