Almas has distinct uses. In Arabic, Persian, and several Central Asian languages, almās means “diamond,” ultimately from Greek adamas, “unconquerable” or “diamond.” It is used for more than one gender across different communities. In Mongolian folklore, almas also names a legendary wild humanoid, an unrelated cultural use. Notable bearers include Kazakh boxer Almas Uteshov and Russian footballer Almas Makhmutov. The intended gender and pronunciation depend on language.
