Meaning and history
Álmos is an ancient Hungarian masculine name borne by the legendary father of Árpád, founder of the dynasty associated with the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin. Medieval tradition connects his name with Hungarian álom, “dream,” because his mother supposedly received a prophetic dream before his birth. Linguists have also proposed Turkic origins, so the literal etymology remains uncertain. Another historical bearer was Prince Álmos, an eleventh-century Hungarian royal.
