Alp is a Turkish masculine name and historical title meaning “hero,” “brave warrior,” or “valiant person.” In early Turkic and medieval Anatolian culture, alp could describe an admired warrior and appears in many compound names. The Seljuk ruler Alp Arslan, whose name means “heroic lion,” is its best-known historical bearer. Notable modern bearers include Turkish actor Alp Navruz and Turkish footballer Alp Yalman. The name is unrelated to the European mountain term Alp.
