Alva has several origins. It can be an English form of the biblical name Alvah, a Scandinavian feminine name related to alv, “elf,” or an anglicized form of the Irish name Ailbhe. American inventor Thomas Alva Edison carried it as a middle name, and suffragist Alva Belmont was a prominent bearer.
