Meaning and history
From a medieval form of any of the Old English names Ælfwine, Æðelwine, or Ealdwine, Alvin was revived in the 19th century, partly from a surname derived from these Old English names. It is now associated with the cartoon chipmunk from the fictitious musical group Alvin and the Chipmunks, who released songs beginning in 1958 and later appeared on television and in movies. As a Scandinavian name, it comes from Alfvin, an Old Norse cognate of Ælfwine.
