Alvis comes from the Old Norse Alvíss, meaning “all wise.” In Norse mythology, it was the name of a dwarf who was meant to marry Thor’s daughter Thrud, but Thor thwarted the plan by questioning him until sunrise, when the dwarf was turned to stone.
