Meaning and history
Amadeus means “love of God,” from Latin amo, “to love,” and Deus, “God.” Notable bearers include the Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791), who was born Wolfgang Theophilus Mozart but preferred the Latin form of his Greek middle name, and the German novelist E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776–1822), who adopted Amadeus as a middle name in Mozart’s honor.
