Meaning and history
The name means “the end” in Basque. It is also the name of a character in the historical novel Amaya, or the Basques in the 8th century (1879) by Francisco Navarro-Villoslada, known as Amaya in the Spanish original and Amaia in the Basque translation.
Amaia rose from #601 to #555 for girls between 2024 and 2025. That year also produced its highest recorded birth count, at 547.
