Meaning and history
Amandus is a Late Latin masculine name from amandus, meaning “lovable,” “worthy of love,” or literally “one who must be loved.” Several early and medieval saints bore the name, especially Saint Amandus, a seventh-century missionary and bishop active in Flanders. This gave it lasting Christian use in parts of Europe. Notable bearers include Estonian sculptor Amandus Adamson and German composer Amandus Ivanschiz. Amanda is the corresponding familiar feminine form.
