Meaning and history
Amber comes from the English word amber, referring either to the fossil resin gemstone or the orange-yellow color, and ultimately derives from Arabic عنبر (ʿanbar), meaning “ambergris.” It was first used as a given name in the late 19th century, but it did not become popular until after the 1944 publication of Kathleen Winsor’s novel Forever Amber.
