Amedeo is the Italian form of Amadeus, a Late Latin name formed from amare, “to love,” and Deus, “God,” conventionally interpreted as “lover of God” or “one who loves God.” It was borne by several members of the House of Savoy. The name is internationally associated with composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, though Amadeus was one of his Latinized names. Notable Italian bearers include painter Amedeo Modigliani and physicist Amedeo Avogadro.
