Meaning and history

Anahita is an Old Persian name meaning “immaculate” or “undefiled,” from the Old Iranian prefix * an- “not” and * āhita “unclean, dirty.” It was also the name of an Iranian goddess associated with fertility and water. In the Zoroastrian Avesta, she is called 𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬛𐬎𐬎𐬍 (Arəduuī) in Avestan, while 𐬀𐬥𐬁𐬵𐬌𐬙𐬀 (anāhita) appears only as a descriptive epithet. She may originally be identical with the Indian goddess Saraswati and has also been identified historically with the Semitic goddess Ishtar and the Greek goddess Artemis.
