Anais is the unaccented form of Anaïs, a French and Catalan form related to Anna and ultimately to the Hebrew name Hannah, meaning "grace" or "favour." The distinctive French spelling became internationally familiar through French-American writer Anaïs Nin. Another notable bearer is American singer-songwriter and playwright Anaïs Mitchell, creator of the musical Hadestown.
