Meaning and history
Latinized form of the Greek name Ἀναστάσιος (Anastasios), meaning “resurrection,” from Greek ἀνάστασις (anastasis), itself formed from ἀνά (ana), “up,” and στάσις (stasis), “standing.” It was borne by numerous early saints and martyrs, including a 7th-century monk and writer from Alexandria who is especially venerated in the Eastern Church.
