Meaning and history
Andromeda is derived from Greek ἀνήρ (aner), meaning “man” (genitive ἀνδρός), combined with either μέδομαι (medomai), “to be mindful of, to provide for, to think on,” or μέδω (medo), “to protect, to rule over.” In Greek mythology, Andromeda was an Ethiopian princess rescued from sacrifice by the hero Perseus. Her name was later given to a constellation in the northern sky and to a nearby galaxy seen from our point of view within that constellation.
