Anna comes from Hebrew Ḥannah, meaning “grace” or “favour.” The name gained Jewish and Christian significance through biblical figures including Hannah, mother of Samuel, and Anna the prophetess in the Gospel of Luke. Notable bearers include German-born American textile artist Anni Albers and Finnish javelin thrower Anni-Linnea Alanen. Annie is the common English spelling.
