Meaning and history

Antigone is a name derived from Greek ἀντί (anti), meaning “against, compared to, like,” and γονή (gone), meaning “birth” or “offspring.” In Greek legend, Antigone was the daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta. When King Creon of Thebes decreed that her slain brother Polynices should remain unburied, she defied him by giving her brother a proper burial and was then condemned to be sealed alive in a cave.
