From Old Irish Aífe, derived from oíph meaning “beauty” (modern Irish aoibh), this name appears in Irish legend for several figures, including a woman who warred with Scáthach, sometimes described as her sister. In one story she is defeated in single combat by Cúchulainn, who spares her life on the condition that she bear him a child, Connla; another Aoife appears in the Children of Lir as the jealous third wife of Lir. The name is sometimes Anglicized as Eve or Eva.
