Meaning and history
Meaning unknown, possibly of Phoenician origin, Aphrodite was the Greek goddess of love and beauty, identified with the Roman Venus. She was said to be the wife of Hephaestus and the mother of Eros, and was commonly associated with the myrtle tree and doves. The Greeks linked her name to ἀφρός (aphros), “foam,” which led to the story that she was born from sea foam, while many of her traits were influenced by the Phoenician Ashtoreth, the Mesopotamian Ishtar, and the Sumerian Inanna.
