Meaning and history

From Avestan 𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬑𐬱𐬀 (Ərəxša), of uncertain meaning and possibly from a root meaning “bear,” Arash is a figure in Iranian legend who was ordered by the Turans to shoot an arrow, with the landing place setting the new Iran-Turan border. He climbed a mountain and loosed the arrow with such force that it flew for several hours before landing on the banks of the distant Oxus River.
