Perhaps from Greek ἀρή (are), meaning “bane” or “ruin,” or ἄρσην (arsen), meaning “male,” the name first appears as a-re in Mycenaean Greek writing, though it may not be of Indo-European origin. In Greek mythology, Ares was the bloodthirsty god of war and vengeance, and the son of Zeus and Hera.
