In Dutch it is a masculine short form of Adriaan, from the Roman name Hadrianus, meaning “from Hadria.” In Hebrew, Ari or Arie means “lion” and is a traditional masculine name, sometimes written Aryeh. The identical romanization therefore represents unrelated histories. Notable bearers include Dutch politician Arie Slob and Israeli-American economist Arie Kapteyn.
