Artemis is a name of unknown meaning, possibly of pre-Greek origin, and it is attested in Mycenaean and Lydian inscriptions; some theories connect it with Greek ἀρτεμής (artemes), meaning “safe,” ἄρταμος (artamos), meaning “a butcher,” or ἄρκτος (arktos), meaning “bear.” Artemis was the Greek goddess of the moon and hunting, the twin of Apollo and daughter of Zeus and Leto, and she was known to the Romans as Diana.
