Meaning and history

Aruna is a Sanskrit name meaning “reddish brown” or “dawn.” In Hindu mythology, Aruna (अरुण) is the charioteer who drives the sun god Surya across the sky. The modern feminine form अरुणा, with a long final vowel, is also transcribed as Aruna, while the modern masculine form is usually Arun; in Sri Lanka, however, Aruna is masculine.
