Ashling is an Anglicized spelling of the Irish feminine name Aisling, from Irish aisling, meaning “dream” or “vision.” The aisling was also a poetic genre in which Ireland appeared to the poet as a woman lamenting the country’s condition and foretelling renewal. That literary tradition gives the name cultural significance beyond its literal meaning. Notable bearers include Irish traditional musician Ashling Cole and Irish schoolteacher and musician Ashling Murphy. Aisling remains the standard Irish spelling.
