Meaning and history
Ashton comes from the English surname Ashton, which derives from a place name meaning “ash tree town” in Old English. It was an uncommon masculine name until the 1980s, when it slowly became more popular for both boys and girls. In the United States, the female character Ashton Main in the 1985 miniseries North and South helped make it more common for girls than boys from 1986 to 1997, but it later became overwhelmingly masculine again, possibly influenced in part by actor Ashton Kutcher (1978–).
