Meaning and history

From Turkic arslan meaning “lion,” this name was originally a byname or title used by several medieval Turkic rulers, including the Seljuk sultan Alp Arslan, whose name means “brave lion” and who drove the Byzantines from Anatolia in the 11th century. C. S. Lewis later used Aslan for the lion protagonist of his Chronicles of Narnia series, first appearing in 1950.
