Athaliah is the English biblical form of Hebrew Atalyah, meaning “Yahweh is exalted.” In the Hebrew Bible, Athaliah is a daughter of the house of Ahab who becomes queen of Judah and seizes power after her son’s death. Her violent reign and overthrow give the name a prominent but troubled royal association. Several men also bear related forms in scripture. Modern real-life bearers are rare, and the name remains primarily biblical.
