Meaning and history
Meaning unknown. Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom and warfare and the patron goddess of Athens in Greece. Her name is likely derived from that of the city rather than the reverse. The earliest known reference to her appears to be a 15th-century BC Mycenaean Greek inscription from Knossos on Crete. She was said to be the daughter of Zeus, who swallowed her mother Metis before Athena sprang fully grown from his head, and she was associated with the olive tree and the owl.
