Meaning and history
Atlas may mean "enduring," from Greek tlao, "to endure." In Greek mythology he was the Titan whom Zeus condemned to carry the heavens on his shoulders; his name is also the Greek term for North Africa's Atlas Mountains, though which usage came first is uncertain.
