Probably means “little father,” from Gothic atta “father” with a diminutive suffix, though other theories propose a Turkic origin, perhaps from atlı meaning “horseman” or from Etil, the name of the Volga River. The name belonged to a 5th-century leader of the Huns, a nomadic people from Central Asia who had moved into Eastern Europe by the 4th century, and it was likely the form used for him by his Gothic-speaking subjects there.
