Meaning and history
French form of the Germanic name Alda, derived from ald meaning "old" and, by extension, "wise" or "noble"; it is the feminine equivalent of Aldo. In the medieval French epic The Song of Roland, Aude is the betrothed of the hero Roland, who dies of grief on learning of his death in battle. Aude is also the name of a river and department in southern France.
