Aurèle is the French masculine form of Aurelius. Aurelius was a Roman family name usually connected with Latin aureus, meaning “golden” or “gilded,” from aurum, “gold.” The Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius gave the family name enduring historical importance, while saints helped preserve its personal-name use.
