Turkish form of the Arabic name Aisha (عائشة), meaning "living" or "she who lives," from a root meaning "to live." It was borne by Aisha bint Abu Bakr, a wife of the Prophet Muhammad, and by Ayşe Hafsa Sultan, the influential mother of Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. It remains one of the most common given names in Turkey.
