Meaning and history

Azariah is a Hebrew name derived from עֲזַרְיָה (ʿAzarya), meaning “Yahweh has helped,” from עָזַר (ʿazar) “help” and יָהּ (yah), a reference to the Hebrew God. It was borne by several Old Testament figures, including one of the three men whom the Babylonian king ordered to be cast into a fiery furnace; his Babylonian name was Abednego.
