Meaning and history
From Old Norse Baldr, meaning “hero, lord, prince,” and derived from baldr, “brave, bold,” Balder is a figure in Norse mythology as the handsome son of Odin and Frigg. After he had troubling dreams as a young man, his mother made everything in the world swear not to harm him, but Loki discovered that mistletoe had been overlooked and, out of jealousy, tricked the blind god Hoder into throwing a mistletoe branch at Balder, killing him.
