Baldwin means “bold friend,” from the Old German elements bald, meaning “bold, brave,” and wini, meaning “friend.” In the Middle Ages, it was a popular name in Flanders and among the Normans, who brought it to Britain. It was also borne by one of the leaders of the First Crusade, an 11th-century nobleman from Flanders who was crowned king of the Kingdom of Jerusalem after the crusaders conquered the city.
